Do you really need a new roof
The average compossition roof lasts 20 yrs, shakes 20-30. The south side wears out first do to the sun. How many layers do you have? Your roof may look bad but if you have 2-3 layers you may not be in as much danger as you think. Check for signs of leaks. walk around the inside & outside of your house.If you have access to your attic it's a good place to spot a leak before it gets bad. Look for stained wood ,mold or mildew or damp insulation. if you have mold it could be from your shower fan. make sure it vents thru the roof.

Becareful of hiring a contractor that asks for money in advance. they well may be legitimate but make sure you know
someone that used them & can vouch for them. There is a link

Type's of new roofing.
There are to many to list but here are a few. laminated compostion shingles, shake, tile & metal. The laminated shingle is the most popular because it's easy to install,
economical,fire resistant,wind resistant,multiple colors & comes in 30,40,50 yr.Tile is a good choice for new construction. metal is slowly getting more popular but is typically to expensive.shakes are not as popular as they used to be because of price & quality.

Choosing A Contractor.
Do it your self or hire a contractor.If you are physically capable it's a good option to save money.But remember you bare the risks.

or co-workers or the yellow pages.

Tear-offs are dirty & you should cover up or move anything you do not want to get dirty.
